All About Herbs
Growing and using your own herbs is very satisfying and easy. There is no comparison
between fresh cut herbs and store bought when it comes to flavor.
Pick a sunny garden spot ( at least 6 hours a day) about 4 x 6 feet. Well drained. You
may want to try the instant bed design on DIY Garden Project.
Some herbs can easily be started from seed (basil, dill, sweet marjoram, parsley).
Follow the instructions on the seed packet and use seed starting soil mix.
When purchasing herb plants look for healthy leaves and roots. Examples: rosemary, sage, thyme, lavender, mints, french tarragon, chives.
Refer to seed packet or plant tag for information on planting depth and width.
Start the herb garden after danger of frost. Here in Northeast Pennsylvania that is the
last week in May. This is especially true for the, and sweet marjoram. Other herbs such
as sage, thyme, french tarragon, sage, mints, chives, and lavender are perennial herbs
and will take light frosts and winter over.
